Indian Economic Service Syllabus

The Indian Economic Service (IES) is one of the prestigious civil services examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. The IES exam is conducted to select candidates for the Indian Economic Service, which is a central civil service responsible for providing economic advice to the Government of India.

The IES syllabus is divided into three parts:

  • Part I: Written Examination
  • Part II: Personality Test
  • Part III: Interview

Part I: Written Examination

The written examination consists of seven papers:

  • General English
  • General Studies
  • General Economics-I
  • General Economics-II
  • General Economics-III
  • Indian Economics
  • Any two Optional Subjects

General English

The General English paper tests the candidate's ability to understand and use the English language. It includes questions on essay writing, comprehension, precis writing, and vocabulary.

General Studies

The General Studies paper tests the candidate's knowledge of current affairs, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, and science.

General Economics

The General Economics papers test the candidate's knowledge of economic theory and principles.

  • General Economics-I covers microeconomics, including consumer theory, producer theory, market structures, and general equilibrium.
  • General Economics-II covers macroeconomics, including national income accounting, theory of employment, output, inflation, and money.
  • General Economics-III covers public finance, international economics, and environmental economics.

Indian Economics

The Indian Economics paper tests the candidate's knowledge of the Indian economy, including its history, planning, development, and current challenges.

Optional Subjects

Candidates can choose any two of the following optional subjects:
